I wonder if more localities will end up cancelling fireworks this year, due to the extreme fire danger

Probably just the exterior cities like Cave Creek where there is a fire danger. Cities like Mesa/Phoenix, not likely.

I like how the OP asked for free things to do, and people are responding with events that aren't free. LOL

OP, be aware that many cities hold their events BEFORE July 4th, for some odd reason. Yeah, AZ is weird like that.

it's not that weird, and not AZ exclusive. A lot of holiday events are held the weekend before or after, especially when the holiday is on a Wednesday.

It's pretty common. I've seen it in many places. I'm sure the idea is that people have the 4th off so they can stay up.

Really? We always did the fireworks the Saturday before. That seems pretty common, especially when the holiday doesn't fall on a weekend.

Yeah, Ive personally never seen celebrations held except on the 4th. The whole purpose of having the day off was enjoying the celebration, cookout, and fireworks.

Because Fireworks are an evening event, it makes perfect sense to have the celebration over the weekend so you have the day after off, so a lot of places do them on the weekends instead. It's totally not unusual
