We have bought our retirement home in a 55+ community and are planning to buy patio furniture for our landscaped backyard. We will probably need a conversation set (i.e. loveseat, two chairs, accessories) along with up to six other nice chairs for throughout the yard space. The main seating area is covered and the backyard is partly sunny most of the day.

We have no problem buying excellent quality furniture but wondering what people find works best? Should we consider a pricier set for the covered area and then buy something less expensive that will get more sun, since the life span may be considerably shorter? Any suggestions on material, cushions, fade resistant etc.???

Do people cover their furniture when not in use? We have a private backyard so we can, I'm not sure others that have open yards to their neighbors would be allowed by convenants to do that.

Thanks for any suggestions, comments and help.

I have a basic faux wicker set from Costco that resides under the patio cover. I want to get a finer teak set when we relocate full time. I’ve been to homes that have metal framed furniture and while it is probably indestructible, the frames get hot. Be sure what ever you get, the cushions are Sunbrella covered.

top quality, made in the usa, super comfy stuff here...

also excellent, but a bit less expensive stuff here..

I think Todays patio stores have the best selection of this stuff on the floor

Personally, I hate wicker, both the "real" wicker and the phony wicker, but, to each his own!

Good luck; either of the brands I listed stand up well in this hell like heat..

You dont have to cover either of these brands, but expect to clean the dust off occasionally, since there will be lots of dust on your nice patio furniture!

We have a nice set of steel furniture with Sundrella fabric cushions made here in Phoenix by Iron Creations.

A bit spendy, but very well made and so far it's holding up great after almost 3 years uncovered in the sun...

I have a nice solid set from Az Iron Furniture with Sunbrella fabric. Beautiful stuff but if I did it all over again I'd get something I can just hose off.

We’ve had some pieces from Crate and Barrel for years and they still look new. Sunbrella fabric, clean lines, very comfortable.

No matter what fabric you have, it’s nice to have a place to stow cushions when you’re not actually using them - besides the sun, we get some really powerful winds periodically & dust can also be an issue. Even inexpensive patio furniture from Fry’s seems to hold up pretty well for a number of years, uncovered..

FWIW, nice outdoor furniture is often very inexpensive on Craigslist- you don’t have to spend a ton of money on outdoor furniture unless you just have your heart set on a specific style or pattern.
