I need ideas for a last minute, one week summer getaway (starting in about one week so not much time to plan). Could be by car or plane and car rental. I'm late 50's female.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

San Diego or San Antonio. Both are great cities for solo vacations, if that's what you're looking for. I liked San Antonio a bit better than San Diego mainly because I didn't have to rent a car in San Antonio - I could get everywhere on bus, trolley or tour, and this was years ago. San Diego might be a bit cooler weatherwise though. SA is having some record heat this summer.

It's been in the 50's F every morning here in Chicagoland the last few days; not over 80 F in the daytime. Not supposed to be over high '80's next week. Flights from Sky Harbor are plentiful and cheap to Chicago. And we are not on fire. We ought to get something for enduring the winters, and this is it.

Do you remember where you stayed in SA, or at least the area? I could drive to SD but the traffic worries me a bit as it's quite crazy from what I remember, even just getting to it, and I don't know where I'm going.

Seattle is awesome this time of year. Or hit both Portland and Seattle, or even some of the coastal towns.

I'll second (or third) San Diego. Traffic is not bad at all actually and it's much more walkable than San Antonio. I would recommend the Gaslamp Quarter or Coronado. Coronado is better if you want to hang out at the beach more, you can rent bikes or golf carts there. Gaslamp is downtown and there's lots of interesting things walkable, you can take harbor cruises, tour the USS Midway, see a Padres game, etc. You can ride the coaster to Carlsbad Village.

Another great option is Laguna Beach. It's artsy with lots of galleries, the village is walkable with great restaurants. There is a ferry from nearby Dana Point to Avalon Catalina Island which is worth the trip.

I second Chicago. Like museums, lakeshore, ethnic restaurants, great shopping, concerts, and more? Especially if you like to eat !!! Chicago hotdogs, pizza, Lou 's, great Chinese too. See the Willis Tower and stand "on the edge". Go to Woodfield Mall. See the lions at the Art Museum. Would take more than a week tho.

This, and what do you like to do on vacation? I would second the idea above for Laguna Beach, but you might not be looking for a beach vacation.
