The storm last week? I was up at a buddy's house by the McDowell's... the rain was so thick and coming down sideways that it looked like a blizzard. White out conditions. The houses across the street weren't even visible through the rain. We watched garbage cans fly down the street at 30 mph it seemed. The wind was so fierce that we were in the BACK of his garage (20' at least) and still getting wet from the wind whipping that rain around. It was intense. His house was moaning and groaning like an old lady.

For a few minutes there I was actually kinda panicky. It was very tornado-like, including that loud freight train sound. I really thought there was a tornado hitting his 'hood.

Maybe, Mr Panicky Cat...

However, I'm more inclined to believe that a very pregnant cloudburst unloaded on top of the area you were in.

For some reason we seem to be having a NON-Monsoon up here. According to the weather online it's supposed to stay dry till ????. Mostly partly cloudy or sunny days. Some parts of the county seem to be getting a little but nothing compared to Phoenix area.

It was pretty bad on most nights here in the Ocotillo area of Chandler last week. In the 4 years I've been here (so 5th summer) this is the worst so far. Usually the intermediate sized trees will have huge branches that have broken off (bigger and smaller are usually fine), but these last few nights have seen two fully grown trees completely uprooted. My local Target parking lot usually has a few branches cracked off after a really windy night, but this last week has been tree-mageddon over there.

What do you think unloaded in Estrella? Power lines rated for 100 mph were crumpled.

As we get further into the fringes we are going to see more storms making the news. I suspect that there were many nasty storms in the north through northwest that went largely unreported in years gone by because not many, if any, people lived there.

This has been an interesting year but by FAR not the worst I have seen. There have been some strong winds and some rain but I can remember a few years back when I-17 would get flooded regularly because the pump stations under the overpasses couldn't keep up. Roofs get blown off (or used to) quite frequently. Indian Bend wash used to flood every year. US-60 used to flood every year. There was even a PSA put out about trash along highways as road garbage was plugging up the pumps. There were power outages every year...I worked with SRP for a few years in the late 90s and they would be out restoring power every time a storm blew through.

I will have to say that the dust storms are new-ish...we would get a couple but not like now. Of course maybe that was just my perception as up until 15 years ago I mainly lived in Scottsdale...

If you moved here in the past 8 years or so I can completely understand that your perception is this has been a bad year though.

I've been here over 40 years living in different parts and have never seen anything like what hit Estrella and Rainbow Valley a week or so ago. Homes literally leveled, 500 Kv transmission towers turned into a crumpled mass of steel. Trees ripped out of the ground and thrown out into the streets. Roofing tiles embedded into the stucco of homes. Huge picture windows blown out of the residents' center. Hundreds of trees destroyed over several square miles. Dead birds on the ground. Saguaros toppled. It was a cut above.

I suppose our perceptions depend on where we live as these violent storms are not uniform. I think that activity has been low in the SE valley which historically gets some of the worst of it . Don't despair if you live out that way Your turn appears to be coming later this week if weather progs verify.

I wonder if that is because the Estrella area is a "recent" development. Used to be farms and a bull riding arena that we used to go to out there...maybe no one reported any of those past storms as no one lived there?

Where I'm at in Chandler we have had storms and rain every night the past week except for Saturday. I was able to get out of my house and take a break from my psycho dog!

About 10 years ago we had a micro-burst and my subdivision lost well over 50 massive trees. That was what I'd consider a significant weather event. That and about 4 years ago we had 6" of rain in one day.
