Good morning....we will be in the Gold Canyon area the first week of October and are seeking recommendations for some nice scenic day hikes. Something in that area that are not too challenging under 3 hours. Appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance

I have done this and second it as a recommendation. Start your hike at dawn, though.

A walk out to the petroglyphs maybe? Usery Park has some good trails as well.

Ewww, no. If they only have 3 hours, IMO that wont get you back far enough on the trails to escape from the "unique" crowd that hangs out there lolol, nor the mediocre views of polluted downtown and ghetto South Phoenix.

OP, go to Toms Thumb. You can summit and back in 3 hours easily, and the views are awesome. Its a black diamond trail, so its a bit exhausting, but well worth it! Not to mention the scenery at the top of the McDowell Mts is unique with all those house-sized boulders. You also get a good view of the Superstitions to the SE and the Mazatzal Mts due East.

Thanks for the tips...I think we may try Peralta canyon. We are headed that way the Week of Oct 6th...does anyone think we should do it at dawn or will the weather be more amenable to late morning?

The average that time of year is 92 for the high and 68 for the low but my personal favorite time to hike or bike in the preserves is sunset, it'll probably be in the 80's if you head out around 5pm or so and you get awesome photos as the sun drops below the horizon.

If you live here and accustomed to being out hiking in the heat I'd say any time of day is fine in October but if you aren't used to it and coming from cooler temperatures it can overwhelm some people. I'm not one to give out advice to people I don't know, so it may be safest to head out in the morning hours and turnaround when you see fit. I personally don't bat an eye at 90's and will go out any time of day if it's under 100.

The Wave Cave is pretty quick and easy with a nice view at the end. I also like Peralta Canyon to the Lone Pine. Flatiron is incredible but a very challenging hike.
