My wife and I are relocating to the Phoenix-area next month. Her job is in Arcadia, and mine is near downtown Chandler. We are in our late-20s with no kids and no plans for kids, so schools are not a concern.

We are looking to rent a two-bedroom place and want some ideas of where to look. We're hoping to find a place in the $1,000-1,200 price range within 30 minutes from both of our offices.

We're relocating from a more compact northeast city, so I'd like to be in a somewhat walkable area. I know the Valley is sprawling, but it would be nice to be able to walk to a few restaurants and shops. We're also very outdoorsy, so a nearby park would be ideal.

Our initial thought was Tempe. We like the park, lake, and the Mill Ave business district. I also like the light rail for getting to Phoenix for concerts, baseball, and basketball games. We currently live near a large university, so we don't mind being close to students.

Do you think Tempe would be a good fit? Are there other areas we should check out? Any specific parts of Tempe or apartment complexes you recommend?

Thanks!

Downtown Tempe for sure. Although I don't think you'll get a two bedroom on that budget. Maybe one.

I was about to suggest Tempe. It really sounds like the best fit for you with regards to both of your commutes and what your wanting in a neighborhood.

You might find Tempe a bit on the young side but Arcadia, old town/south Scottsdale or Tempe should meet your needs and desires

I don't think you need downtown Tempe, but I would stick close to the main north/south streets (Rural Rd, McClintock). That way, if you don't feel like driving or walking, free or fare buses will take you to downtown and to the rail, I have lived in south Tempe since I was your age, and love it.
