Can I find good options for house rentals by just driving neighbourhoods I like? Do they put "house for rent" signs in the windows or yards?

Thanks DetroitN8V.

Any idea how to safely rent from a home owner. I'm really trying to avoid brokers and their arbitrary fees.

You shouldn't have to pay any fees as the renter. Realtor fees are typically charged to the owner/seller. When I rented after first moving here, I found the house on Craigslist, flew out to see it and meet with the owner, gave a deposit and moved in a few weeks later.

That's what I'm looking for. The brokers for house and apt. rentals have large deposits for multiple pets and sometimes a monthly pet fee...quite insane, so I'll be avoiding those.

I did have to pay a hefty deposit for my dogs, but the landlord refunded it in full when I moved out.

Plus from my experience it depends on the neighborhood. When I lived near downtown I would see "For Rent" signs on a regular basis around my neighborhood. But when I lived in north Phoenix or the west valley I rarely if ever saw signs.

OP, the "west valley" can mean a lot of things: crappy neighborhoods, or much better ones.) Need more info there.

Before signing lease, make sure the a/c system sounds quiet enough and blows COLD.

For me the West Valley was anything west of the Phoenix city limits, Tolleson, Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park along I-10.
