My 17 year-old son just got a ticket for going 21 in a 15MPH school zone. The problem is there is no school within a mile in every direction. The normal posted speed limit is 30MPH.

I read the AZ statute here: tinyurl.com/54zqde, but don't see where a school zone can be no where near a school.

Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

It isn't necessarily the proximity to a school that is the issue - it is where the students would cross to get to the school.

Also, you may only be looking for public schools whereas the school zone may be designated for a private / charter or other type of school

No, it's a residential neighborhood. I just drove around there...nothing but houses.

It still may have been a crossing that children take on the way to school.

Regardless, if it is a designated school zone, as it appears according to you to be, the speed limit is posted and is expected to be followed.

Pay the citation.

The posted speed limit is 30, like I said. The school zone is implied to be 15, am I correct (no posted school zone limit)?.

Obviously, speed limits are expected to be followed. This one isn't posted, but I believe it is to be implied. Is that correct?

Does anyone else have any HELPFUL thoughts? This thread is not intended to be for getting out of a ticket. No need to be critical and say things like "Evil person, pay it!".

Is there a school zone speed limit sign posted anywhere?

No, there are two permanent signposts and two middle-of-the-road portable signs. None say 15MPH, just "School Zone".

I'm wondering if no speed limit is posted, that it is supposed to be an implied speed limit of 15MPH?

Since the regular speed limit is posted as 30MPH, I guess a 25MPH speed would be not a significant reduction in speed.

Is there a church in the area? Some churches have preschools, which counts as a "school zone."

Good question, but I drove all over the neighborhood and I actually ride my bike past it once a week. There are only residential houses. No churches, schools, etc.

On the school zone topic, do you know what hours they are in effect, I've heard it's 24/7, is that true?
