Hi,

My husband and I are looking to leave Southern Calfiornia and are considering a few places in Arizona. We both love mountain areas and are considering Prescott, Payson, Kingman, and Flagstaff. I have not been able to find anything on the posts about the look of Chandler or Peoria. Can someone tell me if these 2 areas are flat valley areas or do they have mountian ranges? Also are they considered desert areas or are they green?

Thank you in advance for any input!

Chandler and Peoria are suburbs of Phoenix and are very similar...more desert than anything....not anything like the other places you listed there...

Flat as a pancake, all desert, not a greenbelt, flat just like the San Gabriel Valley, with mountains in the distance.

Phoenix is in the Sonoran Desert. The Phoenix Metropolitan area is a large valley surrounded by mountains that you can see all around. Most of the mountains are Preserves.

So everything within the valley is flat, with a couple of large hills like Camelback Mountain in north Phoenix, and some foothills in Ahwatukee which is south Phoenix.

Chandler and Peoria are completely flat.

Many of the communities allow desert landscape which can be beautiful, and there are some communities who require lush green landscape, so as to give the impression of an oasis where people will forget that we are living in a large desert area.

When I was in Chandler about a month ago, I was surprised at how far the mountains are in the distance. I expected the mountains to be closer because of how posters here say how nice Chandler is. I thought it was a nice city with good and bad areas just like most other cities surrounding Phoenix.

Peoria is not all flat; it is actually more than 50% mountainous and also includes Lake Pleasant. I know because I live here. Here's a link that shows city districts. The biggest district is Mesquite, and it is definitely not flat. City of Peoria, Council District Map page The terrain begins to change north of Pinnacle Peak Road with mountains especially north of Happy Valley Parkway Road. Peoria developments that are in the "mountainous" area are: Vistancia, Rock Springs, Westwing Mountain, Pleasant Valley, Cibola Vista, Sonoran Mountain Ranch, Terramar, as well as quite a bit of land that has very nice upscale homes that are not "inside" a specific named subdivision. Here's a link to help with location of these developments: Arizona Neighborhoods Map I think others who think Peoria is flat haven't been to Peoria recently because almost all of the developments in the mountainous areas just opened a few years ago.

The entire Phoenix area is desert including the mountainous areas. To get to the "green" area of AZ, you have to get to Payson, Show Low, Prescott, etc. Even though "Phoenix" is in the desert climate, some developments have "green" areas or "greenbelts". Vistancia is one of them that does. We live in Vistancia and love it. Another thing I love about Vistancia is that driving into Vistancia you can also see a larger mountain range called the Bradshaws, which are a little further north than the ones in Vistancia. We often see snow on the Bradshaw mountains during the winter here.

To help you see pictures of the mountainous areas of Peoria, here are some websites. (Vistancia consists of 3 sub-communities. Blackstone (private country club community), Trilogy (55+), and Vistancia Village (all ages).
