I've been doing this for a while but it will now be required for some of the prefixes. I had not heard about this before, but maybe I was not listening.

This is actually due to the National Suicide Prevention Line, rather than any overlay codes. Still, an overlay code is inevitable; 480 is projected to run out of numbers in 2024, followed by 602 in 2026.

What might actually not be a bad idea would be a boundary elimination overlay, where the 480/602/623 boundaries are erased and combined into a single area. 623 has plenty of spare capacity well into the future, and using that spare capacity would make sense.

I'd head about it, but, sorry, I think it's ridiculous. Every so often, the public latches onto a case, and requires everything got be changed to accommodate them. I had a robocall in the middle of the night telling me that someone, somewhere might possibly be wandering around in a state of dementia. I'm not sure that thousands, or millions, of people should be inconvenienced for one individual problem.

I'd be curious to see if the suicide rate goes down - which I doubt.

Good that you posted it, though.

Out of state cell phone, and no landline. We've always had to 10-digit things anyway. And I think where we came from required it long before we moved 8 years ago, if I remember right. No change to our routine.

Never knew you could not use 10 numbers. Have been doing it right along. Was like that where I came from.

Same here.

And I'm not switching to a local number. Spam calls are now 100x easier to spot.

The "car warranty" telespammers use area codes in my old city because they think I still live there.

I have a 602 area code and I’ve been 10 digit dialing even other 602 numbers… let alone not doing it for the other area codes in the state. I had 623 and 520 area codes in the past and same thing.

My local calls are still working fine without the area code.

Looks like a boundary elimination overlay for 480/602/623 is in the works:
