When I first read this, I called Phoenix to ask where I could inquire about pedestrian deaths, and the operator was clueless. Maybe we'll never make much progress on anything until the city/county gets better with their telephone systems.

What I'd be curious to know is, what percentage of deaths were in crosswalks, and what percentage were while jay-walking because it's such a long distance between crossings.

Do a public records request. Phoenix is a large entity so I get why the phone operator was confused by you.

Sorry, but I disagree. The operator was confused because most of the operators aren't very good, and because they're not provided with good information. And I don't think the Records department has specifics, nor did I want to sit around waiting for them to get around to it.

But I did reach someone, tracking them down on my own, and had a nice little chat with someone working on pedestrian safety. I was right that a high percentage of the problems are not at intersections, and it was nice to hear that they're aware of the underlying problems (like overly long distances between traffic lights). I'm not sure if they're going to be making much progress in the near future, though.

Your impatience is somehow the city's problem? Jeez.

The city is basically designed as a death trap for pedestrians. The roads are huge, have high speeds, multiple lanes in each direction, inconvenient crossings etc etc. And the lack of pedestrians also means that drivers don’t even bother watching for them. Just the other day I had a walk sign but had to jump back to the curb to avoid getting killed by somebody in a supersized truck blasting through the red light at 60mph. If I had any kind of mobility issues I’d likely have been in very bad shape.

I went careless in Midtown for 2 years...people routinely block the crosswalk at intersections..and have kind of embraced a Mexican driving culture that is poor and stupid.

Most people in Midtown are careless.

When local governments are very slow, or altogether lax, it's everyone's problem.
