I moved in to a new apartment last week in downtown Phoenix and discovered this vent looking thing in one of the bedrooms it looks weird I have no idea what it does cause the switch to it doesn't work.

I had the matinance guy over to do a few work orders he doesn't seem to have an idea just guessed it was some type of filtration system.

If it has a switch to it I'm gonna guess some type of air vent like the ones over the stove that just push the air back at you and don't vent to the outside.

That was my first thought as well. If so, it should have a filter inside that needs changing periodically.

Looks more like a bathroom fan. I thought it was weird that AZ homes have them in the laundry room. I've never turned mine on.

I have one in the bathroom that I use turn on when showering to help with the condensation.

Yeah, that makes sense. It’s the laundry room one that’s weird.

Most air return vents I've experienced do not have filters at the vent itself.
