I can't wait for the first real haboob to sweep through the valley and the first large downpour to occur! I don't remember exactly when the storm occured, but I moved here last August and shortly after I experienced a storm that dropped the temp. from 111 to 78 degrees...Granted the humidity jumped from 16% to 58% that day...so it was sticky.

The monsoons have been getting later and later... I'm a native, and they used to be way worse than they have been in recent years. Global waming?? And the monsoons only last but a SHORT amount of time... in case anyone was scared by the above pictures... they're really not a big deal.

Actually Jen this isn't true and a misconception. My parents remember in the 70's and 80's that there were periods and years that went by that seemed drier, but really storms are unpredictable and patterns are erratic. But yeah, they aren't a big deal, except for the rain is a welcomed changed even if it is a short burst, which is typical. These storms have never produced large quantities of rain in Phoenix and most of the South-Western areas of the state, I believe they have averaged over 2" of rain the last 100 years(last year we received about 2" from the monsoon season). The other 8" of rain typically fall in the cooler time of the year between Dec. and March. Some information for people:

Nice shots! Ive been in one up near Winslow that was a lot worse than that. Must have been a 8 or a 9 on the scale. There was maybe 30 ft visibility in that storm.

I was in one two years ago out in surprise that was one of the worst I've ever been in. I had to pull over because I couldn't see the hood of my car even with the headlights on. Only lasted a few minutes but it was spectacular. Thats the only one I can remember being in for several years. I do remember years ago before all the development when the west side would become a series of flash floods.
