Top 10 Fastest-Growing Cities: The Big Easy Picks Up the Pace - Yahoo! Real Estate

"In terms of sheer numbers, Houston led the nation's cities in numerical increase during the period. Houston added 38,932 residents in the year ended July 1, 2007 to reach 2.2 million."

FYI; Phoenix did come in second

Here we go again.

Sheer numbers don't matter unless the population of Houston and Phoenix were equal or nearly equal. Last time I looked Houston had at least 600,000 more people than Phoenix. I would expect Houston to add a greater NUMBER of people than Phoenix, because it has MORE PEOPLE. You need to look at percentages.

Example - Say City A has 2,000,000 people and grows 5% a year. That city would gain 100,000 residents by the next year. Say City B has 1,000,000 and grows 8% a year. That city would gain 80,000 residents by the next year. Although City A gained more people than City B, City B is still growing at a faster rate than City A. If that growth rate remains continuous, eventually City B will eclipse the population of City A.

Regardless of the percentages, If City A always adds more people than City B then it will always have more people. Also City B would have to add more and more people each year to keep up the percentages. This is a moot point.

This board has had countless discussions about comparing Phoenix to Houston. I have lived in both places and believe me Phoenix has a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!!!!!!!!! way to go before it can even think about getting to where Houston is today. Houston has 3 skylines that are bigger than Copper square. Houston has an enormous port, the largest medical center in the world, NASA's Johnson Space center, something like 26 fortune 500 copmpanies headquartered there and 2 International airports. What is this about? population? who cares Phoenix is a small potato! PERIOD!!..... The next city that Phoenix surpasses in Population will be CHICAGO.

True... However, percentages are vital. If Phoenix continues to grow at a faster rate than Houston year-to-year, Phoenix will eventually pass Houston.

Smile Is Houston really growing faster than Phoenix??

I guess I had false hopes for a number of years. I always thought that Phoenix would just keep growing and growing out of control until it reached like 20 million people or something. I mean just a couple of years ago I saw propaganda indicating that Buckeye was headed towards having a Million people by 2030. I saw renditions of Buckeye having huge skyscrapers.

I heard that the 101 freeway was going to be a mega-corridor teaming with fortune 500 headquarters. I thought deer valley air park was going to go straight to the top. I thought the tempe waterfront was going to be the next lower Manhattan. Isn't North Scottsdale going to be the ultra American Luxury Play Land. Weren't we going to have the biggest airport in the country? Wasn't Disney going to build a new park here? Isn't Phoenix supposed to be the next LA LA land? Aren't we going to catch up with Chicago and Houston and then go after L.A. and New York????
