Hello all - My husabnd and I are considering a move to Phoeniz area from South Florida. He is a chef and Ii am a special ed teacher (Autism Specialist). The company he works for will be opening a restaurant in Scottsdale.

After looking a pay scales, Alhambra is the highest paying school district... Can anyone offer advice about the neighborhood?

We have 2 children - 5 & 3, and live a modest lifestlye... Scottsdale is definitely out of our pricerange!

Look forward to hearing your replies

Yes, Alhambra is one of the best paying in the Valley, but it is in an area that is low income, and with many limited English speakers. Schools from what I hear are well run in most cases, but have your typical inner city problems. Work there, and live elsewhere. There are plenty of deals on housing in the Valley not that far from the Alhambra area district.

Yuk. Not Alhambra. Pick Kyrene, Chandler, gilbert or Scottsdale. Great school districts. And with a special ed degree and autism experience, you will have your choice of jobs. You probably will have more rewarding experiences in one of those districts also.

Thanks for the advice! yes, we were thinking of not living in that area, but I was looking for the pay.... Here the pay is $2,000 - 10,000 more than most districts are offering there.... The pay cut is something we need to consider... We are looking in the mid 200 range.

We are fluent in Spanish and my husband specializes in international cuisine!

We are from CA, but moved to south FL to help out my family for awhile, and are now looking to move back west. FL has become much to transient and there is not really a family atmosphere here anymore.

Again, I really appreciate your advice and thoughts!!!!

It's not near as bad as some schools in the L.A. area, if that's the idea you are getting. Or maybe even the Miami area. Those other school districts are more of a high middle to upper income area, but for whatever reasons, Alhambra and Isaac districts which are close to each other have good pay for a Phoenix elementary district. Hope this helps.

Thanks, it does! I've taught in inner city schools for 14 years.... so I know about them. For the last 4 years, I have been in an incredibly wealthy school. There's pros and cons for each... In the innercity schools, there was a sense of family among the staff and students, not my experience in the affluent school, instead a sense of "I have money, so my kid will get ______ no matter what." Like they deserved it, no gratitude. But in the wealthy school, I have what I need to really teach the kids.

I've been checking out both districts, so we'll see...

I really like Chandler area, it has a nice feel and homes in our price range. I have a year to get it all together...

Again, I appreciate the advice!

Jaime
