I leave around 4:30 or 5. And by the way, my mother works in both downtown and Scottsdale. She has this same commute since 1999. It has never taken her more than 1.5 hours from Scottsdale and 45 minutes from downtown. Don't know how you get held back but it just doesn't add up. I've never heard anyone say it takes an hour from downtown to Goodyear/LP unless an accident has shut down some lanes for some time.

I love the Phoenix metro area. Coming from a colder climate I can attest that Tornadoes/Floods/Snow are all WAY more stressful than sun and some heat. Traffic!!?? Please! Has anyone ever been to Dallas/Atlanta/LA/Chicago?

And the home life is pretty leisure-focused. We like pools, BBQs and patio living, which is attainable on a wide range of salaries... even if renting.

Try finding a place with a pool in LA, SF, NY, CHI, etc. with an avg. wage.

And I'm not pumping the place... in fact I like a little more stress. The leisure vibe makes everyone a bit more flakey and unmotivated. I sorta miss having a lot of hungry, miffed young professionals eager to raise the bar.
We have plenty of stress here, but not in the New York sense. That's fine. I really don't want Phoenix to become another Manhattan ... but I would like to see it become more of a hub for business professionals, instead of a haven for NIMBY types, or loser transplants looking for nothing more than a sunny, cheap place.

The laid back feeling of the area tends to make people move too slow. There have been a lot of complaints about how fast the drivers are ... but I personally come across more annoying slowpokes who are inattentive than I do the fast, aggressive ones. Even worse is how our wonderful state government has decided to install photo radar cameras on the highways to make everyone plod along at ridiculously slow rates of speed ... all because their coffers are short on revenue, I might add!

Most newcomers say that the first few years they live here, but give it some time. After several more summers, most people really become sick of the constant heat & blasting sun. I've lived here all my life, and I used to love the heat when I was younger. Now that I'm older and have some health issues, the heat is more stressful than it used to be ... and by this time, I'm ready to spend the rest of the summer in the mountains. Also, many years ago the nights used to be relatively pleasant. Now, it's considered normal to have 90+ degree lows in July & August. Most of this is due to the heat island effect.

It is not considered normal to have lows in the 90's, I don't think we've had a low in the 90's this summer...they hoover around 81-88 degrees in Phoenix overnight; 84 degrees for overnight lows (July and August) is the 100 year average for Phoenix. As for people getting tired of the heat, I think that is subjective. Some do, some don't. Most people I know in Phoenix don't talk about the heat because it is expected and a reason why they decided to live hear. The only place I hear (or read) constant complaints about the heat is on this forum. Even those I meet for business who travel here do not complain about the heat; most enjoy it...especially those from Europe.

If you are living in or visiting phoenix in the summer you should expect heat. It's like coming to ireland and complaining about the rain!

The good thing about being in AZ is that it really is hot so you really can complain about the heat all you want, all the time. Feel free because it's very hot.
