Comparing Phoenix to Chicago is quite a stretch. I understand steve22 remarks about the Valley--completely. And I have lived many places. I came here to take care of my sick mother and stayed for in-state tuition (as I am a resident now). However, upon graduating, I will be leaving... so remarks to move :-)

However... I must say, there is culture here but not "Chicago culture". The culture is Western culture, or Phoenix culture in that there is lots of outdoor activities from Oct/Nov -- March/April mostly. People ride horses along major streets (think Bridle Path) and the warm weather caters to those with joint problems a lot of the times.

But, if you are looking for things to do Downtown on a Fri/Sat night that isn't a bar and there isn't a game... you should consider other options. I live Uptown and while I enjoy the accessibility to public transportation, the option to choose local restaurants and coffee shops of high quality (again, for Phoenix)... comparing Chicago/Detroit or any other large city to Phoenix isn't fair exactly.

Yes, I will be moving away but Phoenix has served its purpose in my life. I would give ANYTHING to not have to drive to a grocery store 1 mile away (but it'd take ~2 hours on a bus to get there with transfers). The people here are generally nice but there are definite gaps as there are in other cities but for different reasons.

The heat in the summer has a lot left to be desired. But I am sure the snow in the winter leaves a lot left to be desired too.
