My son's girlfriend is going to move out to Phoenix with us this summer to attend community college. She needs to find a clean, very safe (preferably gated) apartment community somewhat near Chandler/Gilbert that won't break the bank. A one bedroom or studio would be best, and the rent needs to be $400/month or less. Is it impossible to find something like this at this price?

Your son's girlfriend should look for a roommate. I don't want to think about what a $400/month apartment looks like.

She'd have to spend twice that much. I've spent the past several weeks trying to find a place in this exact area. Her best bet is to find a roomate and instead of renting from an apartment complex go on craigslist and look for an individual trying to rent out their condo or patio home. Apartment complex's (even the supposed "luxury" communities) all seem to have some pretty shady characters living in them.

Thank you so much. I hadn't checked the prices, and here where we live, $400 can get you a nice 1 bdrm or studio in a nice area. It's ironic that housing prices in Gilbert/Chandler are so reasonable right now. It seems like it's almost cheaper to own!

Pick up an apartment book in front of various supermarkets and you will see that there are some places for 400. There are apartments for that price but I wouldn't say they would be safe or very pleasant. Never know, though. Then you could research further. Apartment prices are a little bit cheaper than last year because of the recession. I picked my place from there then looked it up on apartmentratings.com and saw what other people thought about it. I agree that the best option would be to get a roomate and get a 2 room apt., townhome, or condo so you could rent a better place affordably =)

The nicer apartment complexes in Gilbert/Chandler are going to be more expensive. I agree with the other posters that she could get a roommate and split the rent. We were looking for a short term lease and ended up finding a place in Tempe. The short term lease drove up our rent price, but even without that the cheapest rent we found was almost $700 for a 1 bed/1bth.
