Ouch.
Yep. And if you have a motorhome it can be thousands.

I just went online to register our 1990 Toyota SR5, which is a SUV - but for sake of heaven - they want $75.50 for 1 year renewal and $87.00 for 2 years renewal - in 2007 for 2008 - I paid $24.80 - then in 2009 for 2010 tags I paid $34.55 for 1 year - so what the heck happened in between 2009 and 2011? It was out of commission for a while... But can anyone tell me why this is so God awful high? I am a native here - and have never paid this much for an older vehicle - please inform me!

Did you try asking MVD? They are the ones who could look at it and give you the answer. It doesn't make sense that it would go up that much--I don't recall any increase in VLT, etc., being imposed.

Many states are just like New Hampshire. You have 30 days to register the vehicle in the state you reside in.

Many states are like New Hampshire. Fees have increased greatly as the state tries to balance the annual budget.

There are many snowbirds that have New Hampshire registered vehicles in Arizona. They may or may not have a New Hampshire or Arizona drivers license.

Do you have any relatives still in New Hampshire? If so you could claim your permanent residence there.

If you are in the military there must be many in your unit that can advise you.

I don't have a clue if being in the military has any bearings on all. If your parents are still alive go register the vehicles in their names. If that will save any money.

Bottom line if you are living permanently in Arizona then I guess you will need an Arizona drivers license and register the cars in Arizona.

Also, someone can chime in here. If you purchase a used car from a private party in Arizona there is no sales tax. If you purchase a used car from a dealer there is a sales tax.

Ouch.
And higher!!!!!!!

Here is the exact formula that you can pinpoint it with

Quote:
How much does it cost to title and register my vehicle?
It varies depending on the vehicle. There is a $4.00 title fee; an $8.00 registration fee; plus an air quality research fee of $1.50; and a vehicle license tax (VLT) assessed in place of a personal property tax charged by other states.

The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price reduced by 16.25% for each year since the vehicle was first registered in Arizona (15% before 8/1/98). Then, as of the Dec 1, 2000 reduction, the rate is calculated as $2.80 (new vehicles)/$2.89 (used vehicles) for each $100 of the assessed value. For example, for a new vehicle that costs $25,000, the first year assessed value would be $15,000 and the VLT would be $420.00. The second year the assessed value would be $12,562.50 and the VLT would be $363.06.

I'm pretty sure it takes advanced calculus to figure out the proper fees

Arizona registration was a shock to me too... My 2009 car with a sticker of $34,950 was $170 for tags in MI last year.

What does the value of the car have to do with the fact that they all have 4 wheels and take up roughly the same space on the freeway

If you want to charge fairly the old clunkers burning a ton of fuel per minute should be charged more..as well as those useless gas guzzling SUVs.

My 15000 car cost me 75 bucks a year...so does my 35 000 car.

It matters because the VLT (the largest portion of the total registration fee) is in lieu of a personal property tax on the vehicle. PP taxes are connected to the value of the property. And, the fact that it's like a PP tax is what makes the VLT portion deductible on your income taxes.
