Currently, I'm living in N.H.. I've got the southwest fever, and this year I want to finally make the move to down there. Not quite sure where I want to go though! I've spent sometime in El Paso, and I liked it alot. More trees would be nice though (as long as there isn't snow!!). I'm interested in AZ, NM, TX, NV, and southern CO possibly.

Here are my questions:

1. I'm a mechanical designer (engineer). How is the tech field down there. I've done some research, and so far it seems a bit lacking.

2. I hear Tuscon has a big crime problem. What are some good areas to live in? I'm ok with cities, just not slums.

3. Any advice for a New Englander?

Thanks!

Lockheed Martin in Goodyear, Honeywell in Glendale, Orbital Science in Chandler, General Dynamics in Scottsdale. Those are the big ones around the valley for MEs. Each of those cities is unique, so more research would probably be a good thing. I am biased toward my company/city

Intel would be more EE-centric.

Boeing is also in the valley.

All good info...and very very few jobs. Like everywhere, tech jobs have been shrinking here too. But Phoenix has probably more longer-term opportunity than any of the other places you mentioned.
