I'm a non-traditional female nursing student from another state wanting to find some temporary summer work in a health care or hospital setting this summer to keep up the skills I've acquired so far; I sold my business last fall and am living on my savings until I graduate in another year from Nursing school. I am trying to locate a reasonable (read-cheap) place to stay this summer so that I can work and get acquainted with the area, since I believe I want to move there after school. Any ideas? I am open to any and all suggestions! Thank you!!

Hi,
Can't help you with the lodging question, but I would caution you about moving to Phoenix during the summer expecting to find hospital work. The census at many hospitals has been quite low and layoffs are occuring. Generally, the summer is the least busy season of the year (except for L&D).
The facility where I work needed something like 8 nurses with two days notice and they were easily able to get nurses since most agency nurses are finding it difficult to find work.

Look on craigslist under "rooms for rent." A lot of people are fine with renting a spare room for a few months, and it would be cheaper than a hostel/hotel. It is kind of a crap shoot for both parties in terms of personalities, etc. - but the basic premise is solid. The owner gets some income. The renter gets a place with a little more permanence and usually shares the rest of the place without having to buy a lot of "stuff." I used to rent a spare room to a pharmacist who worked here over the summers and I was very happy with that situation. I was less happy than the applicants with 4 cats, 3 dogs and 2 kids who only wanted a single room and would keep to themselves! Be sure to seek career minded folks, not those looking for best friends, lovers, party animals, etc. Unless you want that as well.

Thank you - that's a great idea....not interested in parties, etc. I just need a nice place to stay for the summer. You must not have a place to rent anymore, correct? Thanks for your feedback!
