Moving to Arizona in June.. are you crazy?! You are going to die of heat exhastion with all the furniture you are probably bringing.

Anyways, I don't ever really go to Phoenix, so can't help you, good luck though!

She's not moving in June. She and the husband are just checking the place out.

If you find that you like the west side and are empty nesters, I would suggest you check out Trilogy/Vistancia in N. Peoria. It is an age targeted community but will allow 45 year olds in. The ammenities are very nice and it sits on a golf course with a great restaurant. Best of luck and enjoy the stay.

A mix of income levels....mature trees and actual lawns. You might like it. Just a thought. There are LOTS of nice neighborhoods all over the city!

. . .

If you get a chance, go to a Ranch Market (there is one close to the airport around 14th st and Roosevelt)....It's like being in Mexico! The food court is out of this world! And the produce is great! Not that you would be shopping in that part of the town every week, if you moved here....It will just give you an idea of how diverse the area is.

47 and empty nesters? That sounds like fun! Lots of outdoor activities here.
Good post...McCormick Ranch is exactly the sort of area I was thinking the OP might like, based on the description they gave. And, it won't be as expensive or "uppity", if you will, in terms of home prices, as the newer neighborhoods to the far north which are very nice, but may not be what the OP is looking for.

And thanks for mentioning the Market. . . hadn't been by that area in a while. Time to go back.

Time flies-I didnt realize spring training was over lol! Sorry bout that. Obviously I am not a very avid sports fan. ;-) McCormick Ranch is nice as well.

Hope you enjoy your trip stacylee!

I've been in Florida in summer as well and...well, you can keep it! Muggy, uncomfortable, buggy...and hurricane season. I'll take Phoenix any day. Actually my company has an office in Boca Raton. It never even crossed my mind to pick Boca over Phoenix, Phoenix won hands down.

The summers in Arizona are longer than in Florida and more relentless. In Florida, you get a rain shower or cloudy day once in a while. The summers out here have an unending quality to them.

Arizona is much better, to me, than Florida, overall, but the summers here are harder.

It depends on the person. I found the summers in PHX to brutal but easier to deal with than the humidity in FL. The summers in both areas tend to last for the same period of time. However, right now in FL the humidity has already started to kick in. Dryer is better and PHX has a dryer summer. But both are harsh.

So we are coming for a vacation and I am making sure we spend one night in the suburbs so I can get a feel for the area (and give DH a good feel about it too). I realize that 1day/nite is not alot, but it is all we have in the area. I really need to compare AZ to the Ft Lauderdale area which is at the top of our list too.

I want to stay in a suburb and drive the neighborhoods a bit. It may sound crazy, but somewhere that we can get supplies at Walmart, go to Starbucks - check out the local grocery store - normal stuff. So which area would be best for us? I was thinking Scottsdale because that is where DH has business. Is this a good city?

We will be coming out with our children - 17 and 24. Our son will be graduating high school in 2010 and going in the military so we will be 47 year old empty nesters and looking to move into the next phase of our life. I love Virginia, but I am a warm weather, tropical girl and I want to settle somewhere like that.

What I want is advice on the BEST suburb to impress my husband . I have been to Arizona, just not Phoenix so I understand the heat issues .

Thanks for your help!

gilbert or scottsdale. Gilbert is more of a sleepy family town, but nice cookie-cutter home communites, sidewalks, schools, etc.

Scottsdale is more trendy and fashoinable, but as another poster said there are also some family neighborhoods there that are good. Scottsdale has more things to do I think. Scottsdale also has some companies that have professional jobs that aren't based on the service sector. Gilbert mostly has traditional service based businesses, eg, grocers, dental offices, eye care, etc, and others peppered throughout the town.

Both are of the better educated populaces in AZ, so if you think that matters, then they bothw ill be suitable. AZ is slightly below the national avg for bachelor's degree holders, so that may tell a tale depending on who you ask. Scottsdale and Gilbert are both well above the AZ average.
