Meanwhile, the state can continue to re-pave the same roads 3 times in a single year, refurbish the Governor's office (remember Napolitano spending tens of thousands of dollars on leather couches?) and waste money debating where to run the 303 loop, but let's cut out those pesky teachers. All they do is hold the future of our youth in their hands... who needs that?

When will we learn that public schools are every bit as important as healthcare (which needs to be a priority over couches, triple paved roads and studying where to run a freeway that will never get built)?

Both of these are abysmal in this state, yet the politicians continue to kneecap them at every turn...

Job opportunities are going to be very slim, if the districts get funds to use, the first teachers called back would be the ones that got layoff notices. New hires will not have much luck, I don't think.

Didn't Mesa school districts just lay off like 200 teachers?

More than that, maybe. Scottsdale, it was even more, including teachers, administrators.

The districts are required by law to give the teachers such notices by April 15, so that's why the flood of them over the last week or so. If the districts get econ stimulus money, etc, they can bring those people back.

The New York Times would not be a reliable source to follow. Close to bankruptcy and has been proven to be highly unethical and bias in their reporting.

Now there is a helpful, on-point-to-the-actual-topic-comment.

To address the topic and the cited information from the paper, (which I suspect was not referring solely to Arizona) while down the road a bit there may be a lot of teachers reaching retirement age, right now the economy is controlling the teacher hiring issue. I think any openings are going to be up in the air, until the federal funds issue gets sorted out.

Here's an article in today's Phoenix paper with a good overview of the situation:

School districts hand out 5,500 layoff notices
