I've got an appointment monday morning at 9am in Tolleson, I'll be staying in scottsdale and I'm wondering when I should leave to get there with time to spare. Any help from people who know the traffic would be great, I've never been to phoenix before.

I would leave at 8, maybe a little earlier just to be sure.

Google Maps people! Why doesn't anyone use them?

Asking how long it takes from one city to another is way to vague...you can drive 30 minutes all through Scottsdale and never leave that actual city, so it depends on where in Scottsdale you are.

Google Maps could give him a basic idea of the mileage and general time it would take, but Google Maps doesn't take into consideration rush hour traffic or construction zones. I think he was trying to gauge from the locals how long it would take with those things figured in. I just looked it up on Yahoo! Maps and it said, "22.98 miles, 34 minutes", but I am willing to bet that getting to a 9 AM appointment across the Valley during rush hour would take much longer than that. I think that is what he was trying to find out. Also, as you pointed out, where he is staying in Scottsdale could make a huge difference, depending on how close it is to freeway access. Perhaps if he added the general area that he is staying in Scottsdale someone on here could give him a pretty accurate idea that what kind of commute time he is looking at.

Sorry guys, I'm in NW scottsdale, like E. Glendale ave & N 17st. Pretty close to hwy 51. And I did google map it, and yes I'm asking because of the traffic, which gmaps doesn't predict very well. thanks again for the answers

Expect heavy traffic going south on Hwy 51 but it should be smooth sailing once you head west on the I-10. I would still try to leave a little before 8 cause I'm not sure how bad traffic gets on the 51.

What about the I-17? looks like I could cut west from E. glendale ave & head south to I-10 from there...

17th st and Glendale (by the 51) isn't Scottsdale, it's north central Phoenix. The 51 can back up if there's an accident or something. The I-10 will lighten up once you get thru the tunnel (get past 7th Ave).

But DON'T go all the way over to I-17. That's crowded, too, (I've been driving it in rush hour a lot lately) and you'll take time just getting over there.

If it were me, I'd leave between 7:30 and 7:45 and not worry about it. You might be early, but you will be relaxed and ready for the interview.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too, if I'm way early then I'll just grab a coffee or something. So take the 51 down to I-10 and head west......sounds pretty simple. thanks guys...

Sean....hope it goes well

gotta laugh at the strategies and tactics people offer and agonize over for something so simple as driving across town......

like you're getting ready to enter the hellfire of war....

"OK, guys, I'm GOING IN!!!!!!!!"......

but I do know it can require planning at times...thanks to all for suggestions to Sean....
