Its not that easy to "transfer" a credit card. Once you apply for an American Mastercard, most banks will NOT look at your Canadian credit score or even have access to it. Even if you use a BMO/Harris combo bank. This is something I have been researching for months. The only thing the bank would give you is a pre-paid credit card with a very small limit. You can google "getting American credit cards" and see for yourself.

that's crazy. The US and Canada both use the same credit agencies (Equifax and Transunion) you'd think they'd have something worked out. It must be some kind of law.

It is crazy, but it affects everything you want to buy down there. We are even going to sell our car here and lease one in Phoenix just to try and get some credit (I hear Honda/Acura will pull Canadian credit). Part of it is because you are going down with no Social Security number so really, you do not exist in the US. There is a book called The Canadian in America which walks you through many financial and tax transitions to moving to the US including credit, and customs. Not only that, but the guy who wrote the book moved to Phoenix, so most of the book represents Arizona laws.

I would definitely ask the bank when transferring. I work in a bank in lending. We can access the Canadian bureaus credit reporting.

If your bank has access to the Canadian bureau reporting it should. You should clarify with the Bank where you intend to apply first and see what they say-not all banks may be able to access it, dont know.
