There was a bull snake that was resting beside my pool today. I saw from my bedroom window when he stuck his head in the water and got a drink. Please tell me that this is not normal for here.

My son went outside to capture him but he had gone away from the pool and he could not find the snake in the yard. We watched him crawl up a two foot fence around the pool and disappear into the rocks.

You are living in a desert, what were you expecting ? unicorns ? The snake is only dangerous if you are a field mouse or gopher.

lol! At least you didn't have a snake in your plane... whomp whomp....

This is the desert, there are all sorts of things that will kill you. The idea is to watch where you walk

You must live on the outskirts of town. I'm sure that is normal there.

Over the years I have pulled a lot of birds out of my skimmer, the first few times was the worst; I usually just put my hand in the skimmer and take out the leaves, having a dead bird in there without looking first is really yucky, soft, mushy and boy does it smell. A few times I even found a gopher.

As long as we are on swimming pools, when I was a kid, another kid would always bring a Baby Ruth candy bar and put it in the pool when it was full of people and then point it out; boy, did they get out of the water fast; he would then volunteer to go in and get the 'poop,' hold it in the air, then eat it.......

I don't think I would eat anything that has been floating around in a public pool, thats like dropping it in the toilet then eating it.

Snakes in the pool? No big deal. I've found baby snakes in the house -- thankfully all benign king snakes (as opposed to the similar-looking and more dangerous coral snakes). As others have said, the desert is home to many snakes -- many of them harmless, a few dangerous. Invest a little time in learning the different types and you should be fine.

I live in the Palm Valley area of Goodyear and am not out in the open. There is a greenbelt across from my house though.

Thank you! This is only response that made sense and the only one that needs to be said! Seriously, I'm sick of people who live out in the prairie complaining about bobcats, rattle snakes, scorpions, coyotes and hanta virus and then asking "Is that normal in Phoenix?" That's like someone living in the Everglades and then asking if there are gators on South Beach.

Very valid point, AzRiver!
