I would suggest on finding job first and then deciding on location for your house.
I know that most people suggesting Ahwatukee but that location has lower number of homes in that price range than Goodyear(Estrella) or Peoria
I agree that when someone is moving to a new place, they should rent for the first year, get a feel of all the places and once they are settled with their job and stuff, choose a home in the proximity. I don't have that luxury right now, so I have to roll the dice and choose a place based on where I would most probably be working in future (IT/Software industry) .. provided the economy gets better ofcourse :-)
Ahwatukee, yes, hard to find a affordable house. We saw few but they were either old or congested - we are ofcourse comparing with newly designed/spacious Estrella and Northern Peoria homes - so our observations are biased. So yes, first it was Location! Location! Location! and now it is Decision! Decision! Decision! ;-)

Hello Local Commuters :-) .. heard that the newly constructed extra lanes in I-10 from Goodyear to downtown will open soon. Most of the IT jobs are on the east of I-17, followed by Scottsdale, and Tempe/Chandler. Below are some of my (maybe faulty) assumptions:

To downtown phoenix, as of now, the driving time(not distance) is approx the same from Estrella or North Peoria (Ahwatukee maybe slightly faster)

Once I-10 gets 2 extra lanes, won't it be faster from Estrella to downtown as compared to North Peoria? Same for Estrella to Tempa/South Scottsdale? Peoria might be closer in distance, but time wise Estrella with the expanded I-10 lanes? Or it is wishful thing :-)

For North/West scottsdale, Estrella would be in a disadvantage, North Peoria fastest, Ahwatukee in middle.

If I were going downtown from Estrella I would not go on the freeway even if it had 20 lanes. It's quicker on the back roads. Now, Estrella is not Goodyear. From most of Goodyear, the trip downtown will be much quicker (during rush hour but not so much at other times) because the bottleneck at Dysart will be gone with the new lanes.

Thanks Ponderosa. How about to downtown Scottsdale, Tempe? Any approximation of rush hour commute time from Estrella?
