As an outsider looking in, and someone who almost purchased a condo for "wintering", I'm curious if Phoenix-area residents think if it was safer when Sheriff Joe was in charge compared to now.

Appreciate comments beginning with yes,no or the same.

Thanks.

Since sheriff Joe left its turned back into to wild west. It's anarchy in the streets, bloodshed like never seen before. Beware of the roaming gangs that are looting and pillaging. It's kill or be killed!

LOL No I don't think much has changed. I hear Sheriff Joe isn't done yet. He wants to challenge Jeff Flake for his seat. The old guy still has his spunk.

Don't hold your breath. He's just doing the only thing he knows how to do - making a spectacle of himself. Like anyone would vote for a crooked, elderly man to represent them in Washington.

Joe Arpaio vs. Jeff Flake? Don't believe it

Rape cases have gone unsolved. Illegal immigrants have been pouring into the state and buying cheap housing, despite what's being said by authorities. Millions of tax payer money has been wasted by an inefficient and corrupt sheriff's department.

Oh wait, I forgot Paul Penzone is the sheriff now.

Sheriff Joe was never "in charge of law enforcement in the Phoenix area. The primary responsibility for "safety" in the Phoenix area lies with the police departments in Phoenix and the surrounding suburbs. The MCSO has responsibility for that only in unincorporated areas, and is responsible for running the county jails. So, crime rates in the area have very little to do with who is running the sheriff's office.

My feelings of personal safety here in the Valley haven't changed in decades. Lived here almost all my life, not going anywhere.

This is spot on. It speaks volumes of Joe's grandstanding when you hear people duped into believing that MCSO is somehow responsible for law enforcement "in the Phoenix area" though.

Default It has been great!

Why, after Ol' Joe left town, it's been just peas & yams! None of my neighbors locks their door anymore. We all leave food out and everyone just roams around visiting, eating, hanging out. A perennial block party. We also babysit for one another, even if neither couple has kids! I have a new level and trust & respect for my neighbors and it all unfolded after Ol' Joe stepped down. Oh and we swap partners now, too.

Though I miss Joe, I feel just as safe (or unsafe depending where I am).

It is NOT safer now. The fragile threads of democracy, safety and justice were held together ONLY with the great strength of an 85 year old former DEA drug war warrior!!!
