How about Papago Park?

Is it Pap-ago or Pop-ago?

We must travel in different circles. I have always said and heard POP-a-go.

Well given this thread is about proper pronunciation Papago is correctly pronounced PAP-AGO. 'PAP' uses a short 'a' as in bad according to it's wiki

to be honest, I think the POP-ago crowd thinks they are correct because they're trying to give it a Spanish pronunciation, although it never was a Spanish or Mexican word

conventional local pronunciation is PAP-ago.....

this brings up the perennial conflict between "correct" pronunciation and "conventional local" pronunciation.....examples are throughout this thread and throughout the country

I only pronounced it "pop-ago" because thats how I hear everyone else pronounce it. I dont think anyone's trying to give it a Spanish sound on purpose, I just think we're all ignorant and repeating what we hear.

I've been pronouncing it wrong too! I don't know why because if you look at the word the first vowel is clearly an "A" and not an "O".

It is funny because I was just watching some videos to get how to really pronounce it in my head and people are pronouncing it both ways on the videos.

What is the origin of the word "Papago"?

Addition: Okay, I don't feel so poorly. The Merriam Dictionary pronunciation is listed as papa-go. So locals don't pronounce it that way?

I've never heard fee-neex or pop-ago.

Germann looks to me like it would be pronounced like German--or possibly GerMAN with the accent on the second syllable--but I've heard the family pronounced it GerMAIN, though I never 'hear' it that way in my head.

There seems to be a difference of opinion among internet sources. If you listen to their audio files, Oxford Dictionaries has it as PAPP but Merriam Webster goes with POP. This is the one that I prefer:
