Hello,

I have some friends from Massachusetts coming out to visit on May 18th. One of the things I really want to do is take them all on a nice hike.. I'm thinking 2-4 hours long.. Can anyone give me suggestions on a 2-4 hour hike in or around the east valley.. It can't be anything crazy because a few of these people have never hiked a day in their life. I'm thinking it's going to be a little warm by then so it'll probably have to be first thing in the morning..

Does anyone have any other suggestions for things to do around here? Last time I had people come out I was unprepared and it ended up being a sucky time. I want to give these people a real good look at what AZ living is all about..

Thanks,
Bob

Are these people who have never hiked a day in their life at least in decent shape? A 4 hour hike mid-May will wipe out these easterners out!

I'd suggest a walk through the Desert Botanical Gardens might be what you're looking for...and its right by the zoo and Papago park.

BUT if you really want to take them on a hike I suggest South Mountain. Start at the fireroad on the 48th St trailhead and follow national trail to fat man's pass and back. BRING PLENTY OF WATER. One little bottle per person won't cut it.

I'm thinking maybe an early morning hike.. Where could I hike before the sun rises to gain enough elevation to see a gorgeous sunrise??

Several east valley hiking possibilities
Usery Mountain Park - Wind Cave is the best known but there are easier flatter trails, too.
Lost Dutchman State Park - Treasure Loop would be good.
Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch
Do start early, wear hats and take more water than you think you'll need.

You might also google the boat rides at Saguaro Lake and Canyon Lake. Both of them have restaurants with views, too.
How about visiting one of the museums in downtown Mesa and taking photos at the big statue?

And if gets warm early, head out to Boyce Thompson Arboretum - a really pretty drive after you get past Florence Junction, and it's usually cooler there.

I live in the N. Scottsdale area and my favorite hikes are Pinnacle Peak and Toms Thumb. I also like Piestawa Peak off the 51 in Central Phoenix. My husband and I are hiking a lot in prep for a 3 day hike/backpack trip to Grand Canyon in late April. Definately start very early...6 am-ish and bring lots of water! It will be hot when you are finished. Have fun!!!

I love the Gateway recreation area at the McDowell Mountains. Tons of trails, and just beautiful.
