Even though I had posted in other photography threads, January 2016 was the first time I posted in the CD photography contest. I had a good fortune of having a hawk sitting close by and my good telephoto lens mounted in time to fire off some shots. I was so excited that I posted in the birds section as well as the contest. I was happy to see it finish in second place.

I see some people with great technical skills, and some with great artistic skills but a few with the rare combination of both. I see their work and try to emulate them. But like many others here I have a full time work and this is just a hobby. We tend to fall into a routine, unless someone kicks our rear and makes us do things. The photo contest does that by having the 30 day time frame and I love that and would hate to have it taken away. Otherwise people will post photos from years in the past and that does not jell with spirit of the contest.

I am torn between choosing the theme and best photo contest. Both have their pros and cons. On some months I may not have the opportunity to choose the right theme but my have a good photo. At other times the theme and photo might click together.

Maybe alternate them every other month?

And thanks to Poncho for doing all the hard work. And to the amazing photographers here who provide the inspiration for me.

How about someone to split contest duties?
The biggest con with the theme contest is coming up with new themes. jim9521 makes a good case.

Here. Here's a theme: corn.

People really think it's so tough to think of a theme?

Lol....

At the market. I could photograph corn in hundreds of ways. Odd to natural to Warhol.

I see some cities that post a photo contest for that city but then the rules page says the contest would have long since ended based on the dates. Are the rules out of date or should the contest link be removed? What's the norm here?

I'm not aware of the contest you are talking about. We only have one current contest occurring in this forum at this time. It it here: March 2016 "Show Us Your Best Shot" Contest

It isn't a forum contest. It is linked in a specific city when you pull up that city's info page.
