I considered it, but the thrifty fifty (50mm, 1.8) suits my needs just fine and is a bargain, at $100! I also have a D90. I use it as my portrait lens.
for a dx type sensor though i find 50mm to close most of the time. its really a short telephoto when put on a small sensor camera.

This is very true. You have to be quite a way back from your subject and your feet are the zoom since the lens is a prime. Hindsight, I should have gotten the 35 mm, but since I only paid $100 for mine, I don't feel too bad and can still get the 35mm. If you're going to be shooting indoors, this lens works very well in terrible lighting. My place has zero natural light and the pictures come out great.
i like the f1.4...why? because all lenses stink wide open compared to stopped down a few clicks. since i use it mostly for low light shooting i can stop down to f1.8 and get very very good results. the f1.8 has to be stopped down further to get very very good results.
i find the f1.8 much more suseptable to flair in the sun too...
i dont look at price when i buy lenses...the better lenses hold their value so well when i change every so ofton i loose so little i rather go for the better lens upfront.
im getting a d700 full frame so i sold off most of my dx lenses at this point. just ordered the 35mm f1.8 dx lens for marilyns d300 as she will sell the d80 and take my d300 when i get the d700.
im using the nikon 24mm f2.8 , the 50mm f1.4 , nikon 105mm-vr macro and nikon 80-200mm f2.8 as my lens set...
marilyn uses the nikon 18-200mm, 50mm f1.8 and now the 35mm f1.8,tamron 90mm macro
