The Nikon 3100 looks interesting. Truthfully, I am still happy with my 6 megapixel Canon 10D and Pentax *istDS. Manufacturers want us to upgrade cameras every year like new cars and I refuse to get caught up in that. I want to create good photos, not obsess over equipment. I am tired of buying tools, I want to master them!

if you dont crop your photos and print large 6 meg is just fine.

in fact using any of the digital only (dx) lenses on a full frame camera like the d700 or d3's will give you a 5-6 meg image at best .

im only upgrading to a d700 because i do alot of low light shooting and want that nice clean higher iso ability. otherwise no reason to change from my d300

I can't tell you how long people have been waiting for a D90 replacement. Seems like the biggest topic on another forum I'm on. Everyone thinks that once the replacement is here, it will drive D90 prices down. I got my body only for $750 earlier this year, which I considered a steal. Let's see how low they go!

I just can't believe that the D90 replacement will cost $1200 for a body only. The D300s is $1500 on Amazon and really, $300 is not that much more if you're already willing to spend so much for a body! The D300 DX is $1800. I personally would not pay that for the D90 replacement.

well we call it the replacement but for all purposes its an all new camera...

whether there is anything worth the difference remains to be seen. in most respects the d300 is a better camera then even the once 4,000 buck d2x.. so a 1800 d300 isnt a bad deal in that respect.

I think the low-end D3100 is a real game changer. At $699 including lens, it represents the first time that a low-end DSLR is fundamentally equivalent with the high end DSLR's in terms of pure image quality. It has a 14meg CMOS sensor and should produce top quality images. Ignoring the ways that it has been crippled functionally, it is a lightweight, basic high end DSLR at a budget price. That will be my next camera, althought not right away. Being the budget-minded photog I am, I will right until the price drops into the $500 range.

i think the d90 replacement will be something really great . it will be announced next month.

im on the fence as far as buying a d700... they fell 700 bucks since they were introduced and it does do everything i want but a new replacement is scheduled for march. that will surpass 3,000 bucks in price im sure and thats about 1,000 more then i want to spend... sooooo im thinking of just buying the d700 anyway. i saw them for 2400.00 bucks or so.

Honestly, for $699, I'd buy the D90 since that price is bound to go down once the new one is released. It's a camera you can grow into, not out of like the D3100. The D3100 has got nothing on the D90 and they can keep their kit lenses. I bought my D90 as a body only and bought a Sigma 18-55, 2.8 to be my kit lens and then 4 other fast lenses quickly after. I used to have the kit lenses that came with my D40, but sold them since I had no desire to use them.
