I have been recently looking to upgrade from my Pentax K-r to either the Pentax K-5 or the Sony A77. I am intrigued with the EVF on the Sony but I wanted to see if any of you actually own one and how it compares to other brands you've owned. I am a professional photographer that is looking into doing weddings (thus the need for an upgrade).
I also like the fact that both cameras I am looking at are weather resistant.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Pentax but like I said, this Sony caught my eye when researching online.
I own an A55, which was a first generation SLT with an advanced EVF which works for me very well. The OLED version used in A65, A77 and NEX-7 (and an option in NEX-5N) is even better and brighter. IMO, besides the overlaid live information at hand while composing the shot, EVF provides an impetus to go manual. It is why pretty much every photograph I take lately is manually focused. I couldn't care less that one of my favorite lenses doesn't even provide a focus confirm! But with A77, you also get Focus Peaking feature that my A55 doesn't (but NEX-3 does).
The drawback with EVF is that, under low light conditions, the attempt to boost signal may show digital noise. But then, I will take that over near darkness in OVF. With the EVF settings done right, you can see exactly what (100% frame coverage) and how the image will be captured. I am ac
I would say that the A77 is a fantastic camera, and it is weather sealed, includes micro-adjustments, and of course, 12 frame per second shooting with a variety of focusing modes. There are a few wedding photographers on a Sony forum I visit and they may be better help in that specific area. In fact, the first hands-on review of A77 I saw was from a Wedding photographer.
