Forgot what plane this is. I don't see it out much, but its hangered some where at the airport I fly out of.
I'd love a ride in it. Maybe next time I see the guy I'll beg and plead.

Now I'm going to be stupid. But why did they fly second seat in old planes. If there was only one person, they would fly second seat. If it was because of ballance, wouldn't they move the wings back a few inches or something?

I've never understood that. Anybody got the answer?

That's a beautiful B-17 Flying Fortress!

I wonder how many of them are still flying.

If I understand your question correctly JGussler, if you're referring to the bi-planes from the 1910's and 1920's, they had the second seat for passengers.

Your right , it has to do with balance. All aircraft have forward and aft limits from the center of gravity. (CG limits)
I’m no aeronautical engineer, but there may be some undesirable flight characteristics by moving the wing .
I would imagine the first tandem two seaters were for training. Assuming you’d end up flying in a single seat plane.
And putting the pilot towards the aft limits would have made it safer for putting your cargo or passengers closer to the CG.
So if the pilot sat up front with now weight in the back it would put the CG to far forward.
Anyway , those are my guesses.

Here's some I took at an RC flying event. Not full size, but planes nonetheless. Last one was my most recent RC plane, sold last year.

What a cool B-Day present!
Yeah, that's my vacation home! Doesn't everyone own a 2nd home the size of an airplane hanger on an island w/ their own private landing strip. My dog would like exploring there too!

Hey, I can sell it to ya'...for a real good deal, it's a buyers market ya' know. There's gotta be a lender out there that could get a real good mortgage for ya' too. Oh, and there's a bridge that I want you to consider in the deal...if you buy it as a package I'll throw in a Turkey Baster for free. LOL

Yep, it was an awesome B-Day gift! IMHO. Someday I'd like to fly out to the islands again, not sure if they allow it anymore though.
