The Azenhas do Mar (Watermills of the Sea) is a coastal village in the municipality of Sintra, Colares parish.
Extending along a river / water which flows into the Atlantic and breaks the cliffs of the coastline, and in which there were mills (hence the name), is underpinned by a beach where there is an ocean pool.
Beyond the picturesque natural landscape, there are several buildings on the watermills of interest, particularly in the Portuguese Style Soft, particularly with tiles on the facades, such as school and residence for the teacher.
Presence in all tourist itineraries of Portugal, is now the site of many second homes, where their resident population stands at 800 people.
Traditionally, in addition to the occupation of milling, the main activities were agriculture, with emphasis on the wine and some fishing and collecting shellfish (limpets and percebes).
