My beautiful grand niece will be 16 this year. Like most in the family, she likes her camera, and it goes where she goes. For the past two years, she's had her little pink Nikon L10 on her no matter what, and she takes great pictures, and has a blast with it.
I'm thinking of her first DSLR for this year, since its a 'special' birthday....
Now, the dilemma:
D40, or D90????
I'm thinking the D40. Why? She's 16. 6mp will probably be all she needs for now, and its a nice little package, nice price, and we can upgrade her when she graduates. The D90, would eliminate the upgrade need later on though, but then again, if she's not going to get serious about her images, there is no need for more juice. Oy! Decisions!
I'm way past sweet 16 and I love my Nikon D40. I wanted a very basic camera because I didn't know how far I'd want to go with this new hobby. What impressed me was going to a site like Flicker and seeing what sorts of amazing photos were taken with a D40. I may never feel a need to upgrade and if I do, it will be a long way off. What I'm saying is that's it's an awesome starter camera. Why not let your niece decide if and when she wants to upgrade to something else?
Shop around. You may find something locally on Craigslist. These days you can get a D100 used for the price a new D40. Even a full package D70 runs cheap these days. And they have a much better processor than the D40. Just a thought.
