It will be interesting to see if the hybrid image stabilization works as advertised. I'm still not sure it will allow you to shoot macro without a tripod. The limitation for me has always been the narrow DOF requiring precise camera movements and not camera shake. On the other hand the original was a fine lens for shooting a variety of things and IS would be welcome in those situations.

I see photos of this guy from South America who uses a Canon XSi and the original 100 Macro, and he seldom uses a tripod when taking photos of poisonous spiders, frogs and insects. He does what he calls "creep-in," snaps a picture, and moves back. He uses the expensive Canon double-light flash unit. He has been waiting for the 100 Macro IS. I always use a tripod, and the standard 100 Macro is a favorite of mine. It's sharp as a tack, and does not cost too much.
I use the 180L and the MP-E and never use a tripod either. Kinda hard when Im slithering around in the bushes or on my belly.
This new 100L would be great for me because I can use it as a portrait lens as well. When Im out in the yard shooting bugs, I wont have to run in the change lenses when the wife says "Take a picture of me and be sure to get my whole body in the shot".

Some future Canon lenses will include a newer IS system developed by Canon recently. The new IS controls movement from two directions instead of one. I thought Canon would include it on the 100 Macro, but I could not find the information at the link above.
