Here is the article:

http://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/stories/2010/10/04/story3.html?b=1286164800^4025761

Key excerpts:

Quote:
Disney has taken the bottom floor at the 136,000-square-foot [Collaborative Innovation Center at Carnegie Mellon University], which Google is vacating as it moves to Bakery Square in East Liberty. John Breckow, a spokesman for Disney, confirmed the company is working to move into the space Google has occupied for the past few years. Breckow said Disney hopes to occupy the space by the end of the year, but offered little other details. . . .
CIC definitely has a great lineup of companies, and Disney helps emphasize CMU's growing role in developing media-related technologies. I wonder if this means Disney will be adding more people in addition to the 8 or 9 originally announced in 2008.

And of course it would be really great if Disney in the future also followed Google in expanding outside CMU . . . and we do make a lot of movies here these days.

Seems like the office is more about robotics and such, seemed to me it would be more related to some of their theme park operations than movie production. So it was really funny to read that right after coming back from Disney World. Entertainment technology can encompass various things, I suppose, but I don't think the Disney office here will relate to any movies that are made here, particularly. Movie production companies are often separate or at least somewhat at arms length from the studios themselves. It's like untangling the hotel business, times 10.

It looks like they are doing animation-related work as well, but I was kinda joking about the movie thing (e.g., animated movies are not, of course, really made anywhere in particular in the same sense as a live-action movie).

Edit: That said, this does make me wonder how the PA film tax credit applies to TV shows.

Edit#2: Answering my own question, "Projects eligible for tax credits under the Program include: the production of a feature film, a television film, a television talk or game show series, a television commercial, a television pilot or each episode of a television series intended as programming for a national audience."

Disney (through that brand or others they own) distributes more live-action movies than animation. I assumed that's what you meant. TV, not sure, but probably still more live-action.

Thus, it didn't seem like a joke to me. But still would likely apply that Disney itself wouldn't have offices here for movie production. Television production, on the other hand, may be a little more direct.
