There are a lot of culinary crazes nationally that I don't understand that haven't caught on yet in Pittsburgh. One example would be cupcakes.
Dozen went from a tiny cupcake store on Murray to a local chain. It caught on just fine. The cupcake place on Ellsworth closed over the summer, so perhaps the trend is fizzling out, although Vanilla Pastry in East Liberty picked up the slack a bit.

I don't know why, but people will stand in line for an hour in DC's Georgetown neighborhood for a Georgetown Cupcake. New cupcake stores have opened back in Reston, VA, Arlington, VA, Bethesda, MD, and other "yuppie havens" as well. I don't get it?
Pittsburghers are a whole are more frugal and less wealthy than the people who live in Georgetown and the other places you lived. Not many are willing to cough up $5 for a single cupcake or a small smoothie, especially in this economy.

I think there's some kind of non-chain juice place in Oakland one of the streets between Fifth and Forbes (not sure if it is Meyran, Oakland, or which). I have walked past one a number of times going to and from basketball games but have no idea of what it is called.
