Here it is:

In Pittsburgh, Trading Pirogi for Farm-to-Table Fare - NYTimes.com

Nice to see these restaurants getting some recognition (although every time I read about Legume moving to a bigger space in Oakland, for me it is bittersweet).

NY Times articles about Pittsburgh always have a somewhat condescending tone, like "oh look, those people out in the hinterlands have restaurants too."

I wish more places would embrace the local food scene other than one word restaurants with $20+ dishes.

Sort of true, but at least we are on the radar. I am surprised we are mentioned at all. Thanks for posting that Brian. I tried to rate your post, but they won't let me because I have to spread it around. lol

Pittsburgh is indeed in "flyover country" from a New York perspective, but despite that there has been a lot of essentially positive coverage of Pittsburgh in the NYT lately.

I really feel it has been a ripple effect because of the G20 and the international environmental meeting held here. Pittsburgh was used as an example of transformation. That kind of publicity is great and lasts a long time. Most people just glance at headlines and Pittsburgh was in several headlines in a positive light that were because we were chosen as a location of some international events. I am sure much of the country was scratching their heads saying, "Pittsburgh?" Even on Leno, he made fun of the G-20 being held here.

All I have to say is keep it coming.

I agree the G20 coverage was very big in terms of changing popular narratives about Pittsburgh. Along with being a World Environment Day host city, I'd add to the list hosting Netroots Nation and RightOnline in August of 2009--lots of bloggers posted and tweeted about Pittsburgh during those events, and their impressions were overall favorable.

It is all part of the big picture. I remember so many "yinzers" saying how stupid it was to hold the G20 here. It was amazing to hear such ignorance. People have no idea what that does on an international scale. Pittsburgh's image has improved since then and it did put this place on the radar. That kind of thing lasts. Even though being the host city of WED was smaller, I think it had a very big impact. I can't imagine what some people were thinking when our city was host. They must have been like, "Are you kidding me, Pittsburgh the smokey city is hosting that event?" Priceless.

It also turns out we did the G20 on the cheap--other host cities have spent substantially more money, and Toronto spent WAY more money.
