I don't know whose fans did it but yesterday's Red Sox/Pirates game broke PNC's attendance with 39,483 and today's game they broke it again with 39,511. Even Friday's game was (at that time) PNC's third best attendance.

And the Pirates took 2 out of 3. Who'd a thunk it?

I don't know why PNC seems to be more popular this year than previous years.

It obviously doesn't hurt that the Pirates have a competitive team this year, but it does seem like the Pittsburgh road trip has suddenly become a standard thing for East Coast baseball fans. Which is great for a bunch of different reasons.

Maybe it is because they aren't a joke like they have been for the past 20 years. No big deal, just 20 years! They aren't going to win the division, but to be over .500 for our little town is really good in baseball.

Or it's next to impossible to get Sox's tickets at home and Pittsburgh is an easy flight.

HillsHollow-- Who's team brought home the Stanley Cup this year.

What I find amazing is that PNC's capacity, as far as I can find out, is 38496. So it held an additional 1,000 people. Were they all standing room or is there a contingency plan to add more temporary seating? Can't imagine fans that devoted to a 0.500 team that seat or not, they want to be there! So it could be that they wanted to see one of the best teams in baseball or it's really hard to get a ticket to a game in Boston.

Got my answer. Pirates to switch to the American League. Imagine all the Yankee fans every year. I heard some rumors that baseball might realign again...so something like that might happen.

Pirates should be in the NL East, and move ATL or FL to the Central. As evident Pirates get better attendance with Phillies, Nationals, Mets than they do with Cubs, Reds, Cards....

Pittsburgh is a Northeast city.

There weren't as many Red Sox fans this weekend as there were Phillies and Mets fans earlier this month, so there were plenty of Pirates fans who were responsible for the attendance records that were set.

Pittsburgh is about a four- or five-hour drive from Philadelphia and a five- or six-hour drive from New York, but it's an eight- or nine-hour drive from Boston, so that explains the difference.

Glad to see that some people in the vast megalopolis aren't afraid to go over the mountains anymore.

So why should more people turn out for a Boston game than a Philly game?

You can fly from New York or Boston to Pittsburgh in under 2 hours. And fares from Boston to Pittsburgh can be under $200.
