My husband and I want to attend an 8 p.m. concert next month at the Carnegie Music Hall in Homestead. I assume it'll be close to 11 by the time the show's over. We'd be arriving to the music hall by bus, as we have no car, and walking to a bus stop after the show. Is this a safe area at that hour? Taxis are unreliable in Pittsburgh, so we can't count on that, and I don't want us to be unsafe walking to a bus stop--I don't know which bus stop yet, but we'd be coming back to Shadyside--at that hour either.

Thank you.

Since its the two of you... Yal should just go ahead to the concert. Though use every street smarts cell in your brain (dont cut through alleys, NEVER look a person in the eyes as they walk by, if someone says "watup cuh" just keep walking). Homestead is crip turf so to just try not to wear red to prevent any reason for some punk to punk you... But you MOST LIKELY will be fine

Default Info...

PittGirl

I don't wish to unnecessarily frighten you but Homestead is not a good neighborhood. During the day, you may or may not be harassed by panhandlers downtown. You may or may not get caught in some drama. After dark, two young people in a strange place will stick out like a sore thumb.

You should avoid situations that have the potential to cause problems you cannot control. Even The Waterfront has gang issues from time to time.

If you really must go to this place at the time you mentioned, take precautions. Have your cell phone turned on in your pocket. Keep your keys or some other sharp object in your hand when waiting for the bus. Try and time it so that you are not standing at a bus stop for extended period. Walk with a purpose-head up, chest out, not looking down or around. Act like you belong there. If approached, be polite. If someone physically touches you, one of you should dial 911 and the other should yell and attack the perp.

Giving in is always the worst option. Keep your head up.

Since you won't be alone, you'll be both should be OK. I saw The Cult last year at the same venue and was by myself and got the bus home. I was OK.

Default Thank you--

My husband and I are in our mid-30s and used to living in cities, just unfamiliar with the music hall area. I'm sure if we attend the concert, we'll use street smarts. Thank you for the responses. I'll update later.

Have fun. It's a nice small-ish intimate venue.

It's not as if the OP is going wandering about in the dark by herself. If she's going to a concert, there will be a few hundred other concert-goers milling around. In those situations, there's definitely safety in numbers.

Its essentially in Munhall, which is a good bit safer than Homestead proper. The neighborhood behind it doesn't really feel sketchy at all to me. I wasn't worried when I went, but then again I'm male . . .
