Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to take a swing through the areas near Stanton Heights and Highland Park at some different times just to make sure I like them. I have also been starting to look in the Aspinwall/Etna areas across the river, as I've heard good things about them from co-workers.
Highland Park is much nicer than Stanton Heights or Morningside. Just try and be around the park and around Highland Ave or a street or two from Stanton. The worst areas of Highland Park are closer to Negley and Stanton, but it is slowly changing. Morningside is nice.
As far as crime and such, Aspinwall is your lowest crime location. It isn't cheap, but to be quite honest, Morningside brings pretty high rent as well.
Aspinwall reminds me a lot of East End neighborhoods like Highland Park, and if it is equally (or more) convenient and affordable, I'd strongly consider it.
The house I'm currently looking at is on Rosecrest Drive in Stanton Heights. Anyone have info on the blocks surrounding that? The area didn't seem too bad on a drive through. It actually reminded me of where I grew up at in Jeannette.

Rosecrest and the other streets on the south end of Stanton Heights are newer than those north of Stanton Ave., but at least were considered less desirable because of their proximity to the Garfield Heights projects on the other side of Mossfield Blvd.
There was a strip mall on Mossfield back in the 70s that failed adjacent to Rosecrest.
As I Like Spam said it is in southern Stanton Heights which I've heard is also "the black side" (probably majority black by a not too big margin). The street in question is close to the border of Stanton Heights & Garfield where like the previous poster said the notorious Garfield Heights isn't too far from. Yet it's clear not too much riff-faff ever spills over, maybe a few drug deals but that's it... So Inok it as a safe area.
