How can one say whilte flight skipped over Pittsburgh? The city population declined before the MSA population began declining.

History of Pittsburgh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So in 1950, Pittsburgh city had a population of 676,806 and an MSA popl of 1,533,000. In 2000, the city had a pop of 334,563 and an MSA pop. of 1,753,000.

That is urban population, MSA is closer to 2.4million but I will agree. I think that white flight skipped over select neighborhoods such as Shadyside and Sq.Hill while others such as Homewood and East Liberty experienced quite a bit of white flight.

Yes, I know about the populations, so many sets of numbers! I agree that Shadyside and Sq. Hill have always been pretty high end, and probably didn't have much white flight.

I am not saying that so called traditional white flight has completely skipped Pittsburgh . We all know that areas such as Homewood , Lincoln-Larimor ,East Hills and several neighborhoods on the Northside fell victim to it several decades ago . However there are several neighborhoods that had survived it and between those neighborhoods and gentrification in other neighborhoods Pittsburgh is able to maintain it's white majority for at least the time being. What happens in the future is yet to be seen as new immigrants from Asia , Africa and Central-South America continue to arrive in America . Not to get off the subject but here in Columbus Ohio( not too far from Pittsburgh ) has seen a major influx of Somalian immigrants within the last 10 -15 years but however C-bus is still holding on it's white majority .

As tongue-in-cheek as this post is, my yinzer dad has a very similar conversation with me. "I've seen those sp***s popping up everywhere!" Keep in mind he's Puerto Rican (yes, a Puerto Rican Yinzer). Some weird self loathing thing going on there.

Never underestimate yinzer's inability to cope with people that are unlike themselves.

Which is why Disney and "Dahn Murtle" seem to be be the two preferred vacation destinations for most of them.

I always joke about Pittsburgher's "OBX" stickers I see everywhere. Do other people take such pride in their vacation spots as we do here? I've never looked for it elsewhere. I should create a "NOT HERE" sticker in the same fashion.

Well, at least this might finally settle the running debate at my children's school as to whether Spanish really qualifies as teaching a foreign language.

No, they don't. If they did people out here in southern California would have "TJA", "LVN", and "WC" oval stickers on the backs of their cars. Incidentally, I've never been to the Outer Banks, but I've been dahn Myrtle plenty of times. It's true. Myrtle Beach is Pittsburgh's satellite city in the south. There are probably as many Yinzers to be found there as there are in Bedford, PA. That's not an exaggeration either. The Pittsburgh presence is that strong.
