Does anyone have any advice as to the route - is it better to take I-80 or the turnpike? Which one is faster, easier, more pleasant?

Hello Henna! I certainly do have advice! I've made this trip many times and have taken several different routes! First, let me put it this way, avoid the PA turn pike. There is a much better way to go. I'm not sure if you can catch it directly from NYC (I believe you can), but it's pretty darn close if you can't, and that is ROUTE 80 WEST. It's a nice straight shot the entire length of Pennsylvania and New Jersey (much straighter and less awkward and cheaper than the PA turn pike). I forget the exit number, but you want to eventually get off, after several hours, at the BROOKVILLE EXIT. At this time, follow signs for ROUTE 28 SOUTH. The signs will begin right at the BROOKVILLE EXIT, however, for a short time you will be on a couple country roads. Don't fret, just follow the signs, and once you get on ROUTE 28 SOUTH, it'll take you straight down and smack in the middle of Pittsburgh. It is really a much nicer way to go! Good luck!

While the turnpike is faster, I-80 is a much nicer interstate. The turnpike is very narrow and under constant construction. You'll be less stressed out on I-80.

Regardless, we are in agreement that the turnpike is a stressful ride worth avoiding if possible.

And don't forget -- I-80 is free (for the time being), but the Turnpike (both in PA and NJ) will cost around $30 or more to make the trip to NYC.

might be faster for you.

I-80 to PA-28 is DEFINITELY faster since Millvale is literally right on PA-28!

I haven't driven this particular route, but a good rule of thumb is to avoid the PA Turnpike if at all possible. They are always working on it, but it's never done! Yes, I was just on it this summer.

I think that it's possible that I-80 is faster because it's less congested and easier to drive at 90mph.
