This contest reeks of desperation.

The oft-maligned hometown of the Steelers and Penguins (the Pirates are best ignored) is offering 100K in its "Experienced Dreamers" contest for folks 45 and older.

The contest runs through Dec. 19, and the winner must donate half the cash to charity. So, you'll be out $50,000 right off the bat.

Pittsburgh Will Pay You $100,000 If You'll Just Please Move There | Adweek
I wish I were 45 !!

(I'm only going to say that once, under this special situation though)...

LOL, you know TigerBeer I was thinking of you when I first read about this. You're creative, and you've been talking about moving back to the US--do you have a 45+ relative you might team up with?

No kidding. It is a slap in the face and shows you no matter how many G20's, movies, international "green" events or good publicity, Pittsburgh will always have a rusty old smokey image to lots of people.

I agree Adfreak's spin on this contest indicates an outdated notion of Pittsburgh. But I find it interesting their spin seemed to find a receptive audience here.

So you win $100k, give $50k away. Then pay taxes on the $100k you won......I think you end up broke or maybe in the hole???

Should be able to get some deduction for the charitable aspect. Not sure if you'd get the whole 50k as the deduction, but at least some of it. So the tax would be on the remainder.

I'm not a tax expert, but they say the second $50,000 will be "in the form of a charitable trust in your name". Off hand, I'd think that would be sufficient to keep it from being taxable income.

And how much of the remainder is taxed would depend upon your other income for the year. For most it's not going to be more than 25% on federal, then I suppose depending upon when it's distributed you could have state/local tax in the previous location (maybe nothing, maybe something). If state/local here, it would be just over 6%. So it could be as much as a third going away, a third of the $50k. That would leave about 33k to play with at least, plus a 50k charitable trust to do some good with. I find that aspect interesting.

The contest itself isn't very negative, it's just the way the OP's article portrayed it.
