Thank you in advance for your help =)

I want to move to the south hills area (ie Dormont/Castle Shannon/Mt Lebanon/Bethel Park) because I want to be able to take the T to my new job downtown. However, I have never taken the T and I was wondering if you could give me an estimate on how long the ride in/out from the city would be during rush hour. I heard that from Bethel Park it takes an hour! I was also wondering if these areas are all safe. I live North of the city so I am completely clueless about these areas =)

Thanks!

p.s. I live in Pittsbugh, PA (Not sure if it already filtered my location)

It does not take an hour!!!

From South Hills Village to the US Steel Building in the morning via overbook it takes my wife 30-35 minutes. If you were in Dormont or Castle Shannon it would take less time as they are closer to the city.

All of the area's you listed are quite safe!

I've taken the T from the very beginning point in Library during the morning rush, and it was 45 minutes to Steel Plaza. So 30-35 mins from South Hills Village seems reasonable. And it should be under 30 from Castle Shannon/Dormont.

Unless the T has speeded up ( !!! ), when I took it almost every day from South Hills Village to Gateway Center Station, it took a very consisitent 45 minutes. The Wood St. and Steel Plaza stops will be a bit less.
Parking at SHV is abundant; not so at other stations.

Unfortunately it takes about the same travel time as does driving at rush hour because it stops every 5 feet, though the plus is that you're not having to sit in a car & can read a book or something.

I get on the Red Line at Mt Lebanon station at 7:45ish every morning. I am at my desk (near the Convention Center) by 8:20 or 8:30 at the latest. That includes the ride and the walk from Steel Plaza.

Driving during rush hour frustrates the heck out of me now. It's much nicer to sit on the trolley with a book or my iPod and enjoy the ride.

dormont junction to steel plaza = 25min. Then add time waiting for T, commute to your house, and commute to your work. For us, it's about 45min total.

Wow, after reading this thread, the T seems to be a big disappointment. Goodness, those times are horrible. Must be WAY too many stops. Are people too lazy to walk two blocks to make the commute times much less? That is crazy long commute times if you ask me. No T for me.
