How can 12 cars pile up on McKnight Road? What kind of speed are people traveling on that road? How much distance do people leave between cars? 12 cars? That seems amazing to me, of course the big SUVs don't stop well, but 12 is really wild on such a busy road with so many crossroads.

This is because people are stupid and can't understand the laws of physics. I'm amazed and see this all of the time. If you're going 60 mph and you are two feet away from the car in front of you, the fastest reaction time and the best brakes are not going to save you if that car in front of you slams on its breaks. Even a sudden 10 mph change in speed, you will close the distance before you have time to hit the break peddle. It's not rocket science.

Actually, SUV's have better breaks because they have to be designed to stop fully-loaded, which is similar to a loaded pick-up truck.

This means that the SUV's in the front with only one person in them slamming on their breaks would most likely be causing the initial pile-up.

Truly shocking someone could thing such a thing. I hope you are kidding.

Just wait until (if) the September PAT cuts go into effect. Might see more accidents like this as more volume fills the roads, especially with people that aren't used to driving on a regular basis.

Actually it will most likely work in reverse. More traffic means congestion and more congestion means slow moving. Might actually be safer.

I wonder if someone was actually trying to cross McKnight at that crosswalk of death (Google Maps) and it confused drivers.

Someone was probably trying to get on the road from a dead stop at the bottom of an onramp...

What onramps? I think the crosswalk of death is possible. You are no doubt taking your life into your own hands crossing that street.
