Taxes in Ohio are usually cheaper...............many people commuting to the Pittsburgh area live in the Poland, New Middletown, Columbiana, Ohio areas.

Anyone know how to evaluate schools in Ohio vs PA though? It's a thought, certainly, I just don't know the Ohio areas very well. More often people are working in the city so it doesn't come up much (though I pass Ohio plates every day on 279/79, presumably they are typically coming in from or going back there every day). Working in Beaver, yes, you are pretty close to Ohio.

Though I really get a feel after all the different things said in different threads that they'd be happier closer to the city of Pittsburgh for its amenities rather than being in Ohio.

I'm not sure how school rankings compare. I think most of these commuters don't actually work in the city of Pittsburgh, but to the northwest a tad.
I guess it depends what kind of amenities you're looking for. If you only need big city entertainment every once and a while than living 40 minutes to an hour from Pittsburgh or Cleveland is no big deal. There are a ton of people from the Sharon/Hermitage area that come to shop in Ohio because the Niles/Warren/Youngstown area offers more in terms of shopping and entertainment.

Youngstown also has http://www.covellicentre.com/ which offers minor league hockey, concerts (we had Elton John last year), shows and events.
There's also:

http://www.youngstownsymphony.com/

Niles also has a minor league baseball team http://eastwoodfield.com/

I don't think that's all that bad for a city of 64,000 people.

I know a ton of people from south of Youngstown that commute to Pittsburgh and even more from north of Youngstown (where I live) that commute to Cleveland.

Many of the people that commute to Cleveland work just south of Cleveland in Independence (about an hr commute), or southeast to places like Solon, Beachwood, Mayfield Heights, Bedford Heights, Middlefield, Burton, etc.

When I worked in Poland I knew a guy that commuted to Greensburg. SouthRangeFamily commutes to the airport. I interviewed at Target in Boardman and two of the managers there commuted to Boardman from Cranberry (they said it was an easy drive, but took an hour).

My boss at work commutes from Center Twp. in Beaver Co. to our workplace just north of Youngstown. Another guy at work lives just outside of Cranberry. Our controller lives in Brimfield by Kent, Ohio, so he's got about a 40-45 minute commute and another girl in our accounting office lives outside of New Castle. BTW, who says the Youngstown area has no jobs, apparently we're pulling from western Pa! Hehe.
